VIRAL REASSORTMENT IN A PIG: two strains of influenza are shown infecting the same cell in a pig. From that cell emerges a hybrid virus that takes genome segments from strain 1 and strain 2 to create new reassortant. Flu viruses have segmented genomes which allows this jumbling of genetic segments to occur. Mexican Flu or Swine Flu is a reassortant generated from human, bird and pig flu viruses. Mexican Swine flu is now a pandemic (see WHO page and the CDC page and the Australian Government page on swine flu status). |
